INTERVIEW

How did your relationship with God first begin, and what drew you closer to Him?

Mychael: My relationship with God truly began during a challenging period in my life, particularly after moving to a new place at the onset of COVID-19. For a while, it felt like I was drifting away, especially as I struggled with postpartum depression. However, a pivotal moment came when I felt compelled to leave my house one sunny day. I ended up at a park where I met a woman, Tasha, who spoke words that resonated deeply with my spirit. It was as if she knew my struggles without me saying a word. That encounter reignited my yearning for God and drew me closer to Him, showing me that He was there, waiting for me to return.

What has been one of the most transformative lessons you’ve learned through your faith journey?

Mychael: One of the most transformative lessons I've learned is the power of vulnerability and authenticity. In my darkest moments, I realized that it's okay to acknowledge my pain and struggles. Through my faith journey, I've learned that God can work through our weaknesses, and embracing my vulnerability has allowed me to connect more deeply with Him and others. This has taught me that healing often begins when we are honest about where we are.

How has your relationship with God influenced the way you handle challenges in your life?

Mychael: My relationship with God has profoundly changed how I face challenges. Instead of feeling overwhelmed and isolated, I now turn to prayer and scripture for guidance and comfort or I meditate on what he's already done for me in every light and dark season of my life. I’ve learned that I don't have to navigate life's difficulties alone; God is truly my source of strength, especially when I can't always get it from my husband, or daughter. This shift in perspective has empowered me to confront challenges with a sense of hope and assurance that I am supported, cared for, and consistently watched over.

What role does worship or prayer play in your connection with God, and how do you make time for it?

Mychael: Worship and prayer are essential to my relationship with God. They are my lifelines, helping me stay grounded and centered. I make time for prayer by setting aside intentional moments each day, like I set an alarm at 8 AM to get up and go lay prostrate before the Lord in a space in my house that doesn't get a lot of foot traffic and I just give my time to my father and afterward, I pray and make sure to read some word because I know how I am after my morning starts. I'm on the go lol due to being a stay-at-home mom. So, often during these quiet times are when my daughter and husband are sleeping. Worship, whether through music or community gatherings, fills my heart with joy and reminds me of God's faithfulness. It’s a vital part of how I connect with Him.

How has your faith impacted your outlook on relationships, including your marriage and friendships?

Mychael: My faith has transformed my outlook on relationships. I'm learning the importance of grace, understanding, and support in both my marriage and friendships. I strive to stand in the gap for loved ones, praying for them even when they may not share the same beliefs. My faith encourages me to foster deeper connections with others, focusing on love and encouragement rather than judgment. So I have to constantly remind myself that everyone's journey is so unique and different and that I may be further along in some areas but God is watching over them too giving grace and covering them until they come back to him. It's for me as a fellow believer to encourage and simply plant the seeds or water them or vice versa.

What advice would you give to someone who is struggling to build a personal relationship with God?

Mychael: To anyone struggling to build a personal relationship with God, I would say: start where you are. It’s okay to feel unsure or disconnected. Take small steps perhaps try prayer (literally talking out loud to God, and just talking as you would to yourself), even if it feels awkward, or find a community where you feel safe to explore your faith. Remember that God loves you as you are, and He is always ready to welcome you back. Trust the process and be open to how He may reveal Himself in your life. Also, always check your circle of people, the content you ingest (music, food, TV, social media, gossip blogs, etc), and your environment. Making these subtle changes of what hinders a relationship with God is essential to chipping away at what's holding you up and back from being free.

In what ways do you feel God has called you to serve or lead in this current season of your life?

Mychael: In this current season, I feel called to serve by sharing my story and supporting others who may be struggling, particularly new mothers. God has shown me the importance of community and encouragement, and I believe I can help others find their way back to Him, just as I did. I’m also learning to lead by example in my family, demonstrating faith through action and prayer, and standing firm in my convictions while remaining open-hearted to those around me. This is still a process for me, so I'm consistently learning to be intentional about being patient with myself and others, even when change hits each of us so differently. So like the word says, "work out your salvation with fear and trembling" we gotta press each and every single day, no matter the cost. And when we slip, God's right there. That's comforting for me.
